GCSE Class Civ Essays

Hi,

I recently started GCSE Classical Civilisation in my school but am having problems in getting students to write their essays well. Does anybody have any marked essays that they are willing to share so that I can use them to show my students what they need to be doing? We are studying ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Oedipus Tyrannus’ and ‘Antigone’, Roman Sport and Leisure, Greek Religion and Pompeii. Any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Classical Workshops

I am looking for organisations that visit schools and put on plays or workshops of a Classical nature. It is part of a promotional drive that I am trying. However, as I suspect is the case with many Classics departments, my budget is rather small!

Does anyone have any suggestions of companies that might do such workshops or where I might be able to find some information? Thank you.

Juvenal 3 and 10

I am teaching Juvenal this year and now that we have worked our way through the text & notes my thoughts are turning to possible essays. For notes I have used Ferguson's edition which I think somebody else has mentioned on an email exchange - the commentary is very detailed.

The essay titles I think are a little more problematic and it would be useful to have a dialogue somewhere on the Classics library where people can post any they have come up with. My early thoughts are:

Is Umbricius the voice of Juvenal?
How effectively does Juvenal satirise life in Rome in 1st Century AD?
How does Juvenal's training in rhetoric reveal itself in the Satires?

What do people think of these as essay titles? Can you think of others?

The Greek Key

I have been asked what the Roman name for the 'Greek key' running border pattern often seen on mosaics was - and I can't find the answer! Google tells me that the single swastika on which the border is based is called 'crux gammata'.

Any ideas? I don't know which Roman authors wrote about mosaic patterns.

Athenian Democracy

Hi

I'm new to the website and have downloaded some of the excellent resources on the Odyssey and Tragedy (Thank you). I was wondering if anyone else teaches Athenian Democracy (AQA AS unit CIV1B). My students did the exam yesterday and many found it hard. Over the last few years it has been the topic students have performed worst on, I was wondering if anyone had any tips or resources?

Cheers

Tully

Does anyone happen to know when - what century - in this country Cicero became known as Cicero (perhaps mainly to schoolboys) rather than as 'Tully'?

Intensive FE Latin

I’ve now some years’ experience in running very disparate groups of 6th form and adult learners of all levels beginners to A2 in the same class, on one session a week, so if anyone is starting up something similar, especially if they’re working in isolation, and is unsure how to start I’d be happy to give a few ideas.

Daggers in Rome

Anyone happen to know if citizens in Rome during the time of Cicero were allowed to carry daggers?

Catiline in the Senate

Is it known how Cicero managed to get Catiline into the Senate on that memorable day? Was the day's topic posted in advance or did Cicero just strike lucky? And why didn't Catiline get up and walk out?
